SUMMARY

This research project collected sibling history data and complemented them with longitudinal data from the Navrongo Demographic Surveillance System.

RESULTS

The level of maternal mortality for the 14-year period preceding July 1997 was 800 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births. With respect to causes of death, it was found that 75% of all maternal deaths that occurred in 1995-96 were due to direct obstetric causes.
